Abstract/Contents: | Discusses experiments performed at Britain's Nottingham racecourse in coordination with the Sports Turf Research Institute and the Jockey Club. The intent of the experiment is to determine which decompaction techniques perform best, and which species of grass can hold up best under the racing conditions. The aeration trial will consist of four different types of treatment -- verti-draining, Twose turf conditioner, compressed air and a control with no deep treatment, and three different spiking treatments. The turf species trial will consist of seven different species. As many as 100 horses will be run over the trial areas at half- or quarter-speed to test the different variables. Suggests these experiments could hold the key to the future development of course management. |
