Abstract/Contents:"Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) reduces the aesthetics of golf course greens and interferes with ball roll and movement. These effects are from the numerous seedheads produced and the clumping growth habit of Poa annua. Poa annua has a long germination season which often requires multiple applications of preemergence herbicides or plant growth regulators (PGR's) for satisfactory control. A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of preemergence herbicides and PGR's for season long control of Poa annua in Tifgreen bermudagrass golf greens overseeded with perennial ryegrass. Treatments of Kerb (pronamide), Rubigan & Patchwork (fenarimol), Ronstar 2G (oxadiazon), Ronstar + 7-0-40 fertilizer carrier, Balan (benefin), Betasan (bensulide), Dimension (dithiopyr), Prograss (ethofumesate) and the PGR's Turf Enhancer (paclobutrazol) and Primo (trinexapac-ethyl) were used in varing rates and application times. The study was conducted at the Ponderosa Country Club in central South Carolina. Two greens were used with plots of 10 ft x 20 ft, utilizing a random block design, and replicated four times with two replications on each green. The greens were overseeded with perennial ryegrass on October 14, 1996 at a rate of 35 lb/1000 ft². Treatments were applied using a C0₂ backpack sprayer calibrated at 20 gal/A and 8003 flat fan tips. The initial application of preemenrgence herbicides was 45 days before overseeding (DBO), with the exception of Rubigan which was applied at 30 and 15 days before overseeding. Subsequent applications of the preemergence herbicides were in December. PGR applications began in December and continued until March. Visual ratings were made on a monthly basis. Bermudagrass and prennial ryegrass injury were rated from 0 to 100% with 0=no injury and 100=death with 30% being the maximum acceptable damage level. Perennial ryegrass cover and annual bluegrass control were rated as a percentage. For the 1996-97, all preemergence herbicides had >87% perennial ryegrass cover by one month after overseeding. Treatments with ≥90% Poa annua control were single and sequential Ronstar, single Ronstar + 7-0-40, and Prograss. Other treatments averaged <50% control. The split application of ROnstar showed unacceptable damage to the perennial ryegrass through March, 1997. Split applications of Prograss (November and December) initially turned the ryegrass a light green color for ~2 months. Turf recovered therafter. Poa annua control by PGR's was best with TurfEnhancer applied monthly from December through March which provided good (≤85%) control with acceptable turf damage. Primo provided minimum control. Overall, best treatments were single applications of Ronstar 2G (2.0 lb ai/A 45 DBO) and Ronstar + 7-0-40 (300 lb materials/A 45 DBO). These provided excellent (>90%) season long control along with minimal turf damage. However, preliminary evaluations in 1997-98 indicate adverse (≅ 40% ryegrass cover reduction) effects on germination of perennial ryegrass by the singular application of Ronstar applied 45 DBO. Prograss also provided excellent Poa annua."
