Abstract/Contents:"A method is described which can be used to check for the presence of very small potential insect pests on a golf course. It uses the established technique of placing small patches of Hardi Foam on the grass, usually used to mark areas of the turf which have been treated with fertiliser or pesticide. It was found that these patches are extremely attractive to small flies, notably frit fly ( Oscinella frit) and a species of hessian fly, Mayetiola spp. The size of the patch does not matter and the optimim time after placement for observation is about 80-90 minutes. The study suggested some interesting facts about the ecology of the two fly species. O. frit appeared to be most active during the middle of the day and most numerous in the rough, while Mayetiola spp. was most active early in the morning, with greatest activity on the fairway."
