Abstract/Contents:"Samples from thirty-four greyhound racing tracks were analysed to identify and record the construction materials used on tracks in the United Kingdom. Samples were taken from the surface, middle and base layers of each track profile. No significant difference was recorded in the particle size distribution of the surface layer (0-50 mm depth) and middle layer (50 mm to the base of the sand layer) of the tracks. Most surface materials were similar in terms of particle size distribution. However, a minority of tracks did have coarser materials and were less uniform than the majority of tracks. Weak relationships were found between particle size and shape characteristics and the hardness and shear strength of the materials tested at two matric suctions under controlled conditions. A typical particle size range for the surface materials of greyhound racing tracks was calculated. However, the main problem is that the typical particle size range only defined that which was normal but it cannot be assumed that sands within this range would be the best to use in terms of track performance or safety. The depth of the sand layer was found to vary between tracks and the overall range of depths was 75 mm to 600 mm. There was a great variety of materials recorded for the base layer (beneath the sand layer) of the tracks. These materials included: sands of different types, soils of different types, gravel, crushed rock/stone, or a combination of these materials."
