| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses research done on the effects of winter ice cover on creeping bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and annual bluegrass. Four inch plugs were collected of each species of turf, placed in quart jars, filled with water, and then frozen. Four replications were done and they were all kept at 25 degrees farenheit for 15-day durations of up to five months. One set of four replications was removed at 15-day intervals, thawed slowly, and evaluated. The results showed that the creeping bentgrass and the Kentucky bluegrass samples survived the full five months, but the annual bluegrass survived only until between the 75th and 90th day. Presents reasons why winter kill may be misinterpreted as the direct result of ice cover. Presents cultural practices to prevent winter injury including drainage, aeration, and appropriate fertility. Discusses the construction of ice rinks on turf and provides suggestions to ensure success. |
