Abstract/Contents: | "Bermudagrass has very poor shade adaptation but there are differences among cultivars. Study 1 compared cultivars Champion, Tifdwarf, and Tifgreen at a 4 mm cutting height at 100 and 20% of maximum photosynthetic radiation (PAR). Study 2 compared these cultivars and Tifway at a 12 mm cutting height. Assessed were leaf vertical extension rate (LER), shoot density (SD), shoot/stolon biomass (BIO), stolon number, and turfgrass quality (Q). In study 1 at 100% PAR: Champion LER was the least; Champion & Tifdwarf BIO were similar; Champion stolon number was 76 & 93% more than Tifdwarf & Tifgreen; Q exceeded 5.5 for all cultivars. At 20% PAR Champion LER increased 22%. Tifdwarf & Tifgreen decreases 16 & 46%; Champion SD was 45 & 65 greater than Tifdwarf & Tifgreen; stolon number decreased 42% for Champion, 71% for Tifdwarf, and 100% for Tifgreen; Q decreased 50-60% for all. Study 2 results were similar. At both heights of cut there was a large increase in LER and decrease in Q for all cultivars during the first week in 20% irradiance, and then all cultivars declined until termination. There were no cultivars in either study that were adapted to growth in the severe 20% irradiance condition." |
