Abstract/Contents:Discusses research on finding low maintenance alternatives to grass lawns conducted in Corvallis, Oregon. The lawns would be composed of broad-leaf plants that require little maintenance, combined with non-competitive grasses. Reviews several grasses that could be used to provide turf cover in winter and early spring such as perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass, which appeared to provide the necessary coverage without out-competing the broadleaf cover. Describes the attributes of the most commonly used plants-- common yarrow, clovers, and English daisy. Emphasizes that these lawns are not intended to produce perfect green lawns and that they are meant to provide an alternative for people who can't or don't want to maintain a conventional lawn.
