Abstract/Contents:"A field study was initiated in May 1997 to evaluate the efficacy of selected herbicide combinations for control of perennial johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense) and common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) tolerance. Herbicide treatments evaluated included MON 37500 at 0.039, 0.053, and 0.072 kg ai ha, alone and combined with Roundup Pro (glyphosphate) at 0.56 kg ai ha. Standard treatments included Roundup Pro at 0.56 kg ai ha plus Oust (sulfometuron) at 0.053 kg ai ha and Roundup Pro at 0.56 kg ai ha plus Plateau (imazameth) at 0.14 kg ai ha. Treatments were applied to actively growing johnsongrass (20-40 cm in height) and common bermudagrass (2.5 to 10 cm in height) on 30 May. Treatments were applied to 1.5 by 45 meter plots using a CO₂-pressurized bicycle boom sprayer calibrated to deliver 1871 ha. Visual evaluations were made 1, 2, qnd 3 months-after-treatment (MAT) for percent johnsongrass control and bermudagrass injury as compared to the untreated checks. All treatments of MON 37500 applied alone produced less than 8.3% injury to bermudagrass throughout this study. The MON 37500 treatments combined with Roundup Pro at 0.56 kg ai ha produced 13.3% to 18.3% bermudagrass injury (1 MAT). This was significantly less than the industry standard of Roundup Pro at 0.56 kg ai ha plus Oust at 0.053 kg ai ha, which had 31.7% injury, and comparable to Roundup Pro at 0.56 kg ai ha plus Plateau at 0.14 kg ai ha that produced 13.3% injury. At 2 MAT all MON 37500 treatments with or without Roundup Pro (1.7 to 3.3%) showed a lower injury rate than the industry standards (5.0 to 8.3%). All injury in this trial was acceptable for roadside situations. Acceptable injury in Oklahoma from treatments of this kind should not exceed 40 to 50% and persist for no more than 4 to 6 weeks. All treatments of MON 37500 applied alone produced 65 to 70% control of johnson grass at 1 MAT. This efficacy level remained relatively unchanged throughout the study except with the 0.039 kg ai ha rate which dropped to 40% control at 3 Mat. The addition of Roundup Pro significantly increased control of johnsongrass to a range of 81.7 to 91% (1 MAT) and 78.3 to 91.7% (3 MAT). These combinations also produced little injury to bermudagrass, which is very desirable in roadside situations. The standard treatments of Roundup Pro and Oust produced 90% control (1 MAT) and 81.7% (3 MAT) while the Roundup Pro and Plateau produced 85% control throughout the study. All treatments containing Roundup Pro produced acceptable johnsongrass control(minimum of 80%) throughout the duration of this study. After two years of studies, the MON 37500 product when tank mixed with Roundup Pro has proven to be very effective in providing season-long control of johnsongrass while minimizing injury to desirable bermudagrass."
