Abstract/Contents:Laboratory heat treatments of seed of annual bluegrass (Poa annua), large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop], field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) and common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris) were made at various temp. and times these were 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 or 60 deg C for 30 min to 8 h. The resulting thermal death curves helped estimate the time required under plastic tarping to reduce weed seed populations. The effect of soil moisture content on the injury of seed at the optimum killing temperature and time was also studied for each species. In field trials, plastics, including mylar, tedlar, black plastic, polyethylene and ultra violet-inhibited polyethylene, were compared for maximum heating of the soil."
