Abstract/Contents:"Three duplicate studies were conducted during the summer of 1997 in north central (site 1), western (site 2), and eastern (site 3) Oklahoma to evaluate the effects of ammonium sulfate (AMS) when combined with selected glyphosate treatments for johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense) control. Herbicide treatments evaluated included half rates of Roundup Pro at 0.28 and 0.43 kg ai ha plus AMS at 3.81 kg ha combined with either Oust at 0.053 kg ai ha or Plateau AT 0.14 kg ai ha. Full rates of Roundup Pro at 0.56 and 0.84 kg ai ha were also combined with either Oust or Plateau at same rates with no AMS. Treatments were aplied to actively growing johnsongrass (20-60 cm in height) and common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) the last we of May. Treatments were applied to 1.5 by 4.5 meter plots using a CO2-pressurized bicycle sprayer calibrated to deliver 187 1 ha. Visual evaluations were made 1, 2, and 3 months-after-treatment (MAT) for percent johnsongrass control and bermudagrass injury as compared to the untreated check. All treatments of Roundup Pro combined with Oust produced 31.7 to 40% (site 1), 10 to 18.3% (site 2), and 11.7 to 30% (site 3) bermudagrass injury at 1 MAT. Treatments of Roundup Pro and Plateau produced 13.3 to 26.7% (site 1) , 26.7 to 31.7% (site 2), and 20.8 to 31.7% (site 3) bermudagrass injury at 1 MAT. The addition of AMS to the half rate treatments of Roundup Pro did not appear to consistently influence bermudagrass injury. All of the temporary bermudagrass injury produced during these studies would be acceptable (40% or less) for roadside turf. Little to no bermudagrass injury was noticed at 2 and 3 MAT evaluations at any of the studies. At site 1, full rates of Roundup Pro plus Oust produced good to excellent johnsongrass control (86.7 and 95%) at 1 MAT. Comparative half rate treatments with AMS produced 6.7 and 16.7% less control at 1 MAT. Similar reductions in control were also evident at 3 MAT for these same treatments. This reduced level of control would not be acceptable (80% or less) for season-long control. Full rate Roundup Pro plus Plateau treatments produced good to excellent longterm johnsongrass control (85 and 93.3%) at 1 MAT. Comparative half rate treatments with AMS produced 8.4 and 8.3% less control at 1 MAT. Reduced control was also evident at 3 MAT, however only the Roundup Pro 0.28 rate plus Plateau and AMS treatment was not producing acceptable control at this time. At site 2, johnsongrass control ranged from 81.7 to 93.3% for all treatments at 1 MAT. Johnsongrass control increased to a range of 93.3 to 100% at 3 MAT evaluations. At site 3, johnsongrass control also ranged from 81.7 to 93.3% for all treatments at 1 MAT. Johnsongrass control remained steady at a range of 79.3-96.63% for all treatments at 3 MAT. The addition of AMS to the half rate Roundup Pro treatments produced and maintained johnsongrass control similar to their comparative full rate treatments throughout the duration of the studies at sites 2 and 3. Past studies with reduced rates of glyphosate plus AMS combinations have shown their ability to produce equivalent or superior control of annual weeds when compared to full rate treatments. It does appear that perennial johnsongrass may not be quite as susceptible to these lower half rates. However, it does appear that slightly lower rates (lower than today's current standard rates in Oklahoma) of Roundup Pro used in conjunction with AMS are possible without sacrificing acceptable weed control. Studies will continue in 1998 to further evaluate if reduced rates of Roundup Pro in tank mix combinations will provide suitable control of johnsongrass on Oklahoma highway rights-of-way."
