Abstract/Contents:Discusses the impact that genetically engineered turfgrass seed varieties have on the turfgrass industry. Many varieties of herbicide resistant, disease resistant, and insect resistant turfgrasses already exist, and many of the herbicide resistant varieties may be available commercially within the next two years. New genes are being researched to determine their potential in turfgrass varieties. These genes can provide turfgrass tolerance to heat, cold, drought and salt. They also provide faster germination, slower or reduced vertical growth, and more efficient water use. Includes a brief discussion of the evolution of genetic engineering in agriculture.
