Abstract/Contents:Several years of field testing and a 1983 greenhouse trial have been conducted to evaluate the usefulness of HOE-A25-01 (fenoxaprop-ethyl) as a postemergence crabgrass ( Digitaria sp. ) herbicide in four species of turfgrass. Postemergence control of crabgrass with minimal turf response had been observed at rates of 0.12 to 0.25 lb.ai/A. Optimum species, and climatic conditions. Turfgrass species and varietal tolerance were examined in the greenhouse in the winter of 1982-83. Both established sod (2 year) and seedlings of varying age were tested. The turf species examined in ascending order of response were: fine fescue, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. Of these, only Kentucky bluegrass was visibly affected to any significant degree. The visual effect of HOE-A25-01 on Kentucky bluegrass has been identified in the greenhouse as a temporary plant growth regulator-like "suppression" of new growth and a "dulling" of the treated leaf surface. Field studies indicate less growth sup pression of Kentucky bluegrass with HOE-A25-01 than greenhouse studies. Kentucky bluegrass varietal studies conducted in the greenhouse indicate minor varietal differences to HOE-A25-01. All four turf species tested have exhibited commercially acceptable tolerance to HOE-A25-01. Limited studies indicate that HOE-A25-01 also provides excellent goosegrass control.
