Abstract/Contents:"Seedbeds were prepared in early June and left fallow for one month. Emerged weed seedlings were sprayed with paraquat and a bush lima bean crop was planted with minimal soil disturbance. Over a two month period emerging weeds were killed with two applications of paraquat as a directed spray. Soil samples were taken at 10 sites, to a depth of 7 cm in 1 cm increments. Sound seed were quantitatively removed from the samples by wet sieving and air flotation. The recovered seeds were identified and tested for germination at alternating 20°C-35°C temperatures. There were no viable seed of Digitaria sanquinalis (L.) Scop. in the upper 2 cm of the soil. The numbers of germinable annual sedge (Cyperus spp) seeds were significantly reduced in the upper 2 cm. If dormant sedge seeds were included in the totals, the differences were not significant. Counts of viable Poa annua L. seed were also significantly reduced in the upper 2 cm. The numbers of viable Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. were significantly reduced only in the upper cm."
