Abstract/Contents: | "In 1997, 197 golf courses in Oklahoma were surveyed to determine the number of rounds of golf played, employment, and expenditures generated by the maintenance sector of the golf course industry in 1996. Questionnaires were returned by 79 facilities (40%). During 1996, 5.7 million rounds of golf were played at Oklahoma's 197 golf courses. There were 2,000 employed course maintenance workers who were paid a total of $28.8 million in wages. A total of 3,450 non-maintenance workers were reported, an average of 18 per course. Non-labor maintenance expenses totaled $17 million. Renovation and new construction costs in 1996 were $59.3 million. New equipment costs totaled $8 million and new irrigation expenses totaled $7.4 million. The total acreage devoted to Oklahoma golf courses in 1996 was 24,500 acres which gives an average of 124.4 acres per course. Bentgrass was used for 97.8% of the greens while Bermudagrass was the predominate species on all other areas of the course. The impact of golf course maintenance expenditures on economic output in Oklahoma's economy was estimated at $219.3 million. The overall impact of golf course maintenance on employment in Oklahoma was to provide 4,451 jobs." |
