Abstract/Contents:Discusses ways to take care of the problem of backflow. If backflow was allowed to enter our drinking water it would become contaminated. A backflow prevention device must be added to prevent cross-connection of clean and contaminated water. The longer the pipe that the water has to travel in, the more pressure the backflow has. There are four preventers of backflow for irrigation systems: atmospheric vacuum breakers (AVB), pressure vacuum breakers (PVB), double-check valve assemblies (DCA), and reduced pressure-type devices (RP). Each is covered in detail. Different states have different laws and each have had them in place for varying amounts of time and this has caused confusion among consumers and leaders in the irrigation systems.
