Abstract/Contents:Reviews how earthworm castings impact golf course turf. Describes the relationship between climate and earthworm castings. Also describes research projects associated with earthworm castings. Washington State University-Puyallup and Oregon State University are evaluating traditional cultural practices and new techniques as they are incorporated into an Integrated Casting Management Program specific to species in the Pacific Northwest. Cultural practices being evaluated include: fertilizers, liming, clipping removal, and sand topdressing. Another project will evaluate the acidifying effects of ammonium sulfate, ferrous sulfate, and elemental sulfur for their ability to reduce earthworm casting. Other projects include studies on the effects of clipping removal, sand topdressing and soil texture on casting amounts. Also includes information on earthworm biology.
