Abstract/Contents:Discusses renovating sand bunkers on golf courses. The first step in renovating a bunker is to determine the reason for renovation. Some of these reasons are as follows: sand may be contaminated, edges may be deteriorated, construction may be poor, or drainage may be lacking. Once the problem is determined the architect should be contacted to see about his/her recommendations. Step three is removing the old sand. This sand can be used in other areas of the golf course but not bunkers because it will probably be contaminated. Step four is to identify the original bunker edge. There are several ways to go about this, but a soil probe or digging work the best. Step five is to dig out the original shape of the bunker. Step six is to consider water movement into the bunker and set up drainage as necessary. Step seven is to address the edging problems. Step eight is to reestablish the bunker edges and banks. Step 9 is to install the proper drainage. Step 10 is to install the sand. Make sure the sand conforms to the USGA standards and make sure it is uniform by testing each truck load.
