| Abstract/Contents: | Root growth of P. annua was investigated in a pilot trial sown on 15 May 1970 on a 60-cm deep artificial profile of sandy soil at pH 5 containing 4.5% OM; the water table was 90 cm. In the 1st year after sowing an even sward developed, with abundant rooting down to 60 cm, but in the following year there was a considerable decline in both root and top growth and in rooting depth, and bare patches developed. The role of sowing date and low winter temperatures in lack of persistence is discussed. |
