Abstract/Contents: | Analysis of soil samples from pioneer sand-dune grassland showed a wide variation in edaphic factors, often over short distances; this bore an evident relationship to micropattern within the vegetation. One site with high OM, P, Mg and K was characterized by the presence of Poa annua, Bromus mollis, Trifolium dubium, Erodium spp. and 7 other species. Phleum arenarium preferred low-nutrient, low-OM, high-pH sites whereas Vicia lathyroides did not. Aira praecox avoided high-pH sites with high levels of Ca and available Fe and tended to show non-linear responses to environmental variables. |
