| Abstract/Contents: | Several growth retardants were evaluated for use on Rhode Island roadside grasses. A low-maintenance polystand of red fescue, Colonial bentgrass and Kentucky bluegrass was treated with mefluidide, MH, MON-4621, and combinations of mefluidide with paclobutrazol (PP333) or flurprimidol (EL500). In an attempt to define the longest possible period of spring use, treatments were applied April 12 when grasses were emerging from dormancy, and again on April 27 and on May 10, 1983 just prior to seedhead elongation. Mefluidide and MON-4621, effectively suppressed seedheads at all three application dates. MH and combination treatments were less effective, particularly at the early application date. All treatments reduced the height and clipping weight of grasses. Combinations of paclobutrazol and flurprimidol with mefluidide resulted in the greatest suppression of growth. The overall appearance of plots was affected by an infestation of red thread disease (Laetisaria fusiforme) from late May through mid-June. The severity of disease appeared to be related to time of treatment as well as an interaction with some growth retardants. Color was considered to be acceptable for roadside turf with the exception of treatments containing paclobutrazol or flurprimidol. |
