Abstract/Contents:Discusses how the greatest obstacle to having a enivronmentally sound approach to pest infestations has been the lack of consistent effectiveness from biological controls. One of the ways to implement biological control is by releasing benefical organisms into the landscape or the turf. Another way is to modify the cultural, chemical and other management practices to preserve the existing natural-enemy populations. The best way to preserve natural enemy populations is to use wise pest management practices. Try not to use chemical pest controls if at all possible and if they are necessary, use corrective measures that minimize injury to the benefical organisms in the system. Planting patterns and diversity of plant species also effect the natural-enemy complex. Insect pathogens can also be used to decrease the insect population, although they are slow-acting and they only suppress the pests. Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus popillae are two programs that can be used to decrease the insect population.
