Abstract/Contents:Describes the advantages and disadvantages of using pre-emergence control. Mulches are useful in landscaping for moisture conservation, appearance and the added benefit of weed control. The use of fabrics and films under mulches will also help with weed control although they do not work well on slopes. Chemical controls can also be used to control the growth of weeds. Fumigants and pre-emergence herbicides can stop the growth of weeds. There are several choices that can be used for the control of annual grasses in ornamental beds. Pre-emergence herbicides such as trifluralin, prodiamine, oryzaline, dichlobenil and pronamide control annual and some perennial weeds.
