Abstract/Contents:Describes how shade poses a challenge for managers of plants and turf. Plants need the light in order to be active. Shade will also affect soil moisture conditions. There are two different types of shade: full and partial. When the quantity of light changes so does the quality of the light. Shade tolerance is also a factor to consider when maintaining the turf or plants. Pruning trees and mowing turf at 3 inches can help the turf to get the light that it needs and to maximize the interception of light. Watering infrequently and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization can also help. The use of shade-adapted plants can also help the site maintenance.
