| Abstract/Contents: | Describes how grounds maintenance practices must be changed when using reclaimed municipal wastewater. The water is usually of a lower quality and might not be suited for irrigating. The author calls for grounds managers and waste-water-system operators to communicate and to give a better understanding of waste water. Salinity is a big concern when thinking about using municipal water. It has salts that can consist of calcium, potassium, magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride that could be harmful to turf and plants. Inorganic salts are also a problem. A treatment that has three stages can be used to remove suspended solids. The use of reclaimed water can be offset by increases in retro-fitting, cultivating and amending soils. Warning might have to be placed if the water being used to irrigate is not safe for people to drink. The use of potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride can reduce the amount of damage that will be done to the turf. |
