Abstract/Contents:Established turf areas may require renovation because of poor stand or extensive weed competition. A non-selective, rapid acting non-residual herbicide can be a valuable tool for establishing new turf. An established field of meadow fescue ( Festuca pratensis Hudson) containing a mixture of broadleaf weeds was spray treated with SC-0224, SC-0545, or glyphosate at 2.2 or 4.5 kg/ha on August 9, 1982. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replicates. Each plot was 8.9 sq meters. The percentage weed cover and the major species present in each plot were determined after 9 and 35 days. After nine days the weed cover in plots treated with 4.5 kg/ha of glyphosate, SC-0224, or SC-0545 was reduced 92, 90, and 85%, respectively. The same compounds applied at 2.2 kg/ha reduced the weed cover 80, 77, and 79%, respectively. These compounds at 4.5 kg/ha reduced the percentage weed cover by 96% after 35 days. The compounds at 2.2 kg/ha reduced the weed cover by 94.5, 93.5, and 92.5%. Sixty days after treatment the entire field was overseeded with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) at 112 kg/ha. Percentage weed cover, weed density, and percentage of major species were determined 21 days after overseeding. An excellent stand of ryegrass was obtained with no significant difference in percentage cover, or number of Italian rye seedlings/0.1 m2 observed with any of the three compounds at either rate.
