Abstract/Contents:The response of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf to growth regulators as effected by three levels of nitrogen treatment and three herbicides was evaluated in 1981 and 1982. Treatments were applied to the same plots both years. Main plots in three replications were three nitrogen treatments in strips, and three herbicide treatments in square blocks. Subplots were five growth regulator treatments in nine replications. Treatments were randomized. Height of foliage six weeks after treatment, and just before mowing for yield, was significantly affected by nitrogen rates and growth regulators. The interaction of nitrogen X growth regulator was significant. All growth regulators reduced growth 25 to 40%. Mefluidide had least growth followed by fluprimidol. Height of foliage treatments made at 2-week intervals after treatment showed differential rates of growth. Bluegrass was heading out by four weeks after treatment and was fully headed by six weeks. Two treatments, mefluidide and MH + chlorflurenol, reduced percent heading 99 and 85%, respectively. Fluprimidol reduced heading 15%. Height of heads in the check was 37 centimeters. Heads in treated plots were about 30% less in height than the check. Yields six weeks after treatment were a comprehensive measure of growth and were significantly affected by nitrogen and growth regulators. The nitrogen X growth regulator interaction was also highly significant. Reductions in yield ranged from 15 to 39%. Mefluidide had greatest reduction followed by fluprimidol. Differences in turf quality ratings were large soon after treatment. Mefluidide almost completely prevented growth and reduced the green color when evaluated 2 and 6 weeks after treatment. The differences in quality among growth regulators were not great for regrowth after mowing but fluprimidol received significantly the best rating. In 1981 a severe epiphytotic of leaf spot was evident by six weeks after treatment being particularly severe in plots treated with mefluidide, fluprimidol, and MH + chlorflurenol. Oxadiazon caused an offcolor of foliage two weeks after treatment especially in plots treated with mefluidide. Later in the growing season quality differences for herbicides were not significant. Significant weed problem did not develop in either year because of dry summers and falls and excellent turf at the beginning of the experiment. It is possible that in future studies growth regulators such as chlorsulfuron and fluprimidol, which in addition to reducing growth also had weed control potential, could be advantageously combined with mefluidide and MH + chlorflurenol which greatly reduced both heading percent and growth.
