Abstract/Contents:Sipha flava (Forbes), a potentially severe pest of sorghum in the USA, was found to spread from sorghum to Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) and centipede grass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) in Georgia, at least under greenhouse conditions. Food selection tests in the laboratory with excised leaf sections or in the greenhouse with whole plants of these grasses indicated that whole plants of C. dactylon were preferred to a significant extent, as indicated both by the numbers of aphids produced and by the relative amounts of leaf damage on the 2 species. In tests with excised leaves, more aphids were produced on E. ophiuroides but less damage occurred, possibly because the Cynodon leaves were killed more rapidly than the Eremochloa ones by the aphids. It is concluded that C. dactylon is the preferred food-plant but that E. ophiuroides is more tolerant of aphid infestation.
