Abstract/Contents:A study was conducted comparing a forage-type tall fescue cultivar (Kentucky-31) and a dwarf cultivar (MIC-18) for drought resistance and recovery. Cultivars were grown under well-watered or drought-and-recovery conditions, and relative water content (RWC), leaf water potential, leaf chlorophyll fluorescence, canopy reflectance, canopy biomass, and leaf area index were measured. "Forage-type Kentucky-31 had better drought resistance than dwarf-type MIC18. With soil drying, reductions in canopy green leaf biomass, leaf area index, leaf water status, and photosynthetic efficiency occurred later and were less severe for K-31 than MIC18. After rewatering following soil drying, more and quicker recovery in turf growth and physiological activity also occurred for K-31 than MIC18."
