| Abstract/Contents: | "In nature, many mechanisms for inhibiting pests have evolved. Among these mechanisms is the production of chemicals that repel pests and/or are toxic to them. The development of commercially acceptable pest control products from botanical pesticides is difficult, time consuming and expensive. However, new classes of chemistry are being developed from natural pesticides derived from microbes that have great potential for being valuable tools in the control of insects, diseases and other pests. Two classic examples are the development of products from strobilurins derived from a mushroom species found in France and the development of fluidoxonal from naturally occurring pyrrolnitrin which is found in numerous Pseudomonas spp. The development of these two classes of chemistry for control of diseases in turf and other crops will be discussed." |
