Abstract/Contents:Presents the results of a study evaluating a gradual overseeding program for converting golf course fairways to bentgrass. The program is being tested on perennial ryegrass research center plots and on a mainly Poa annua golf course fairway. Existing turf is treated with one of three rates of trinexapac-ethyl then overseeded with one of three rates of creeping bentgrass seed in the spring, fall or spring and fall of each year. This program is contrasted with a conversion program using the non-selective herbicide Roundup to completely defoliate the area. Data for 1995, 1996 and 1997 suggest that the gradual overseeding program leads to bentgrass establishment and spread in perennial ryegrass turf, but is unsuccessful in Poa annua turf. Trinexapac-ethyl does not appear to increase bentgrass establishment but does improve the quality of existing perennial ryegrass and Poa annua. A seeding rate of 1.0 lb creeping bentgrass seed per 1000 square feet led to greater establishment than a rate of 0.75 lb, but a rate of 2.0 lb offers no improvement over the 1.0 lb rate.
