Abstract/Contents:Field studies comparing three rates of MSMA (0.56, 1.12, and 2.24 kg ai/ha) and two MSMA application schedules (7 and 14 day intervals), and three rates of HOE-581 (0.17, 0.28, and 0.56 kg ai/ha) applied once were conducted to evaluate their effectiveness in controlling crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.]. A single or two applications (7 day interval) of 2.24 kg ai/ha MSMA provided excellent control of crabgrass in the 2 to 4 tiller stage when applied mid to late July. Two applications of MSMA (1.12 kg ai/ha on a 7 day interval) provided an acceptable level of control; whereas, the third application of 1.12 kg ai/ha furnished an excellent level of control. Three applications of 0.56 kg ai/ha MSMA, applied on 7 day intervals reduced crabgrass populations 78.6%, but control was judged unacceptable. In an initial study a single application of 0.17 or 0.28 kg ai/ha of HOE-581 did not provide an acceptable level of control. This was attributed to mowing treated crabgrass within 48 hours of application and dry environmental conditions during the test period. Further testing, however, yielded excellent crabgrass control with HOE-581 regardless of rate (0.17, 0.28, and 0.56 kg ai/ha) or the use of crop oil. High rates of MSMA (2.24 kg ai/ha) caused an unacceptable level of short term (10 to 14 days) discoloration on 'Citation' perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Similarly, HOE-581 (0.17, and 0.28 kg ai/ha) caused an unacceptable level of discoloration on tee height (0.75 cm) 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). The discoloration, however, dissipated about 2 weeks after HOE-581 was applied. HOE-581 also caused a slight stunting and mild discoloration on 'Citation' perennial ryegrass, which persisted for about 30 days. No conspicuous, phytotoxic effects were observed on non-irrigated stands of 'Vantage', 'Pennstar', and 'Sydsport' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), or 'Caravelle', 'Citation', and 'Pennfine' perennial ryegrass treated with 0.17 or 0.28 kg ai/ha of HOE-581.
