Abstract/Contents:Experiment was conducted on a five-year-old stand of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and fine fescue ( Festuca rubra L.) to evaluate preemergence herbicides on the control of crabgrass (Digitaria spp.). The effects of rates, formulations, and combination of herbicides were investigated. Performance of the herbicides was based upon injury to turfgrass, efficacy on crabgrass control, and residual activity over the season. Bensulide, napropamide, oxadiazon, DCPA, and butachlor with certain formulations and rates provided excellent season long control. Bensulide at 5.6 kg/ha gave poor control, although 7G formulation consistently resulted in better control compared to the EC formulation. Bensulide at the highest rates (7G at 7.8 and EC at 11.8 kg/ha) gave excellent control 12 and 16 weeks respectively after the application. Napropamide at 3.4 kg/ha gave 90% or better control, while the lower rates proved ineffective. Season long crabgrass control was obtained with combinations of bensulide and napropamide. Oxadiazon (WP) at 3.4 kg/ha proved excellent in crabgrass control with an inital [initial] turf injury, while granular or peltech formulation failed to provide adequate control. Turf injury from oxadiazon (WP) treatments was fully recovered after two weeks of growth. DCPA at 11.2 kg/ha provided excellent control over the entire season (16 weeks). Butachlor at 8.4 kg/ha also gave acceptable control upto 12 weeks, while the control was less 16 weeks after the application.
