Abstract/Contents: | Describes the waste disposal and composting program developed by Halifax Regional Municipality residents in Nova Scotia. After the current landfill was found to be causing extensive environmental damage and after an incinerator proposal was rejected, residents formed the Community Stakeholders Committee (CSC). CSC decision-making was consensus based and the committee was very involved with the new waste facility design, which incorporated a new state-of-the-art landfill and composting center. Design features discussed include: source separation; acceptance of only stable waste in the landfill; implementation of community-wide recycling and backyard composting; organics collection; and program costs. |
