| Abstract/Contents: | Describes Pythium diseases of seed. Details conditions favoring the diseases: longer germination time, high soil moisture and low oxygen levels, temperature (some species are "warm temperature", some are "cool temperature"), greater planting depth, overseeding, and cultivar selection (bermudagrass and all of the cool-season turfgrasses were susceptible to Pythium aphanidermatum). Relates seedling susceptibility to exudation of cellular compounds into the soil. Includes seed treatments to improve stand establishment, including pregerminated seed, seed priming (osmoconditioning), and fungicide seed treatments, as well as biological seed treatments for control of seed and seedling pathogens (summarized in a table). |
