Abstract/Contents:Plots were treated with two rates of oxadiazon (i.e. 2.0 and 4.0 lb ai/A) and overseeded 5, 10, 15, and 20 weeks follow- ing herbicide application with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Prior to overseeding, the test area was treat- ed with glyphosate and one half of each plot was verticut. Germinability of perennial ryegrass and crabgrass ( Digitaria spp.) seed was evaluated two weeks after overseeding; per- cent perennial ryegrass cover, percent crabgrass cover, and percent bare ground were determined at the conclusion of the experiment. Data showed that acceptable perennial ryegrass cover could be obtained 10 weeks following a 2.0 lb ai/A application of oxadiazon. The 4.0 lb ai/A application of oxadiazon provided better crabgrass control than the 2.0 ai/ A rate after 10 weeks, but caused an unacceptable level of bare ground. Overseeding 15 weeks following application of oxadiazon (overseeded July 22) resulted in poor ryegrass cover and all plots exhibited an unacceptable level of bare ground. Poor establishment at this time was attributed to environmental stress. Best ryegrass cover was achieved by delaying overseeding 10 weeks. In treated plots overseeded at this time the 2.0 lb ai/A oxadiazon treatment exhibited best ryegrass cover, but did not significantly vary from plots treated with the 4.0 lb ai/A rate. Plots treated with 4.0 lb ai/A, however, continued to exhibit an unacceptable level of bare ground. The practice of verticitting prior to overseeding at 5. 10 amd 15 weeks following herbicide application initially enhanced ryegrass germination. The initial benefit, however, was lost in the 5 and 10 week overseeding treatments due to disruption of the herbicide barrier and encroachment by crabgrass. Although good perennial ryegrass cover was obtained with or without verticutting when overseeding 5 and 10 weeks after applying 2.0 lb ai/A of oxadiazon, the level of subsequent crabgrass control in 2.0 lb ai/A treated plots was judged unacceptable.
