Abstract/Contents:"In 1996 and 1997, several different seeding methods were tested above the timber line of the Pfannhorn in South Tyrol. 24 experimental plots (each 20m²) with different seeding methods were observed. One dryseeding method, mulch seeding with and without gluten, seeds with gluten (but no mulch), cover crop seeds with two species of rye, and a seed mat were examined. The results of the investigation were as follows: In extreme locations, such as alpine areas, seeding methods with a 3 to 4 cm layer of mulch showed the best results. The use of straw mulch layers improved the canopy density by about 20% compared to the seedings with no mulch. When the appropriate glutens are used, an additional 20% cover is possible. The mulch layer is also good for the growth of herbs and grasses (greenhouse effect). Although both straw and hay are well suited for mulch, the hay is more wind-resistant because its finer structure results in thicker meshing. Thus, the straw should be combined with glutens. Cover crop seeds did not provide good results in this test. Unprotected seeding methods (without mulch) are not suitable for alpine areas."
