| Abstract/Contents: | "One of the dramatic changes that the game of golf has undergone in the 1990's is the banning of metal spikes at numerous golf courses, and the subsequent introduction of non-metal spike alternatives. In 1997 there were 17 different alternatives available on the American golf market to the traditional 6mm and 8mm metal spikes available. A study was conducted at Michigan State University in 1998 to evaluate 26 different shoes/spikes at 7 different golf courses ("travelling golf spike study") on different types of rootzone mixes and on different species/cultivar stands. A proportional odds model was used to analyze turf quality. The results showed that the 6mm and the 8mm spike ranked lowest on all courses. The differences were significant for most of the locations. On average, the FootJoy Classics, the Stabilite Softspikes, the All-Performance and the Dry Joy equipped with Flatspikes ranked highest." |
