Abstract/Contents:"Each year grub control trials with insecticides are conducted in New Jersey. Generally, three locations are selected, one each in south, central, and north Jersey. In most instance golf courses with high grub populations and irrigation capability are selected. Two types of trials are used for insecticide evaluation: (1) small block, a replicated random design pattern with each block containing 100 square feet (10 feet x 10 feet) and (2) area applications, one to two acre sites using labeled insecticides. Data are collected four to six weeks after insecticides are applied. The following labeled insecticides have produced the best and most reliable results on all grub species tested: bendiocarb (Dycarb, Ficam W, Turcam) at two pounds of active ingredient per acre, ethoprop (Mocap) at five pounds and trichlorfon (Dylox, Proxol) at eight pounds." Inconsistent results have been obtained with isofenphos (Oftanol) at two pounds of active ingredient per acre. Also, "Diazinon (Spectracide) at 5.5 pounds of active ingredient per acre has not provided consistent results." "From the standpoint of biological control agents, milky disease is quite specific for Japanese beetle grubs." Finally, "[w]hen attempting grub control there are several considerations other than selection of a proper insecticide. Proper timing of application ranks high on the list."
