Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of commercial formulations of Bacillus popilliae, causal agent of milky spore disease, against Japanese beetle grubs (Popillia japonica). Field tests were established at three golf courses; two additional tests were conducted at Spindletop Research Farm. The latter tests used steel enclosures driven into Kentucky bluegrass turf and seeded with grubs. Golf course plots were treated with three commercial milky spore formulations. After three years of field testing, no significant increase in incidence of diseased grubs was noted. In addition, one of the formulations used did not even contain infective spores of Bacillus popilliae. The authors conclude that milky spore formulations cannot be recommended as a reliable alternative to conventional insecticides due to formulation problems and lack of efficacy.
