Abstract/Contents:Evaluates insect growth regulator RH 5849 on Japanese beetle grubs (Popillia japonica) and fall armyworm caterpillars (Spodoptera frugiperda). RH 5849 mimics the action of ecdysone, the hormone that causes an insect to shed its skin. It induces certain insects to undergo a lethally premature molt. Tests show RH 5849 to be extremely effective against grubs even at extremely low doses. RH 5849 was also completely effective against fall armyworm caterpillars. "Similar effects have been observed for cutworms, and will probably also occur with sod webworms. Systemic activity of RH 5849 is noteworthy because it could provide simultaneous control of both root- and surface-feeding pests."
