| Abstract/Contents: | Glyphosate, mefluidide, maleic hydrazide, chlorflurecol, chlorflurecol + maleic hydrazide, and the compounds Po-San and Sustar 2-S (fluoridamid) [fluridamid] were compared for inhibiting grass growth in Cynodon dactylon cv. Tifway, as an alternative to mowing. The compounds were applied in early May. The best overall reduction in vertical shoot growth was obtained with glyphosate at 0.5 lb, mefluidide at 2 lb and maleic hydrazide at 4 lb/acre. Chlorflurecol alone or with maleic hydrazide was least effective. Slight discoloration was observed, particularly with glyphosate and Sustar 2-S. In a second trial, various compounds including the experimental compound MBR 18337 were evaluated for phytotoxicity 7 days after application to Tifway turf. MBR 18337 at 0.2 and 0.37 lb was most phytotoxic, followed by a mixture of chlorflurecol and glyphosate at 2 + 0.125 lb/acre. Mefluidide at 0.5 lb was least damaging. |
