Abstract/Contents: | Discusses experiments used to quantify relationships between grub density, root damage, foliar growth, and aesthetic quality of different cool-season turfgrasses to establish damage thresholds. Two studies were conducted: one to measure effects of irrigation, and the other to consider grass species effects. Masked chafer grubs were more damaging than Japanese beetle grubs, contrary to popular belief. "Damage thresholds for both types of grubs are much higher than industry 'rules of thumb' of 3-6 grubs per ft². Damage thresholds for grubs in tall fescue were considerably higher than for Kentucky bluegrass. Other grasses showed intermediate effects. The value of irrigation in masking grub damage was not quantified." |
