Abstract/Contents:"The goal of this project is to determine the importance of predators in reducing populations of pest insects in turf, and to identify those turfgrass insecticides that are least disruptive to this process." Large plots of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) were treated with carbaryl, isazophos, cyfluthrin, or nothing. Impact of treatments on predators was monitored with pitfall traps. Japanese beetle eggs (Popillia japonica) were implanted into the treated plots, and fall armyworm pupae (Spodoptera frugiperda) were implanted into all plots. The effects of predator elimination on grub population were studied. Isazophos and carbaryl had the greatest negative impact on beneficial predators, while Tempo (cyfluthrin) seemed to have only a small negative impact, if not a beneficial one. "Probably the most striking result from these 1991 studies was the finding that fall grub populations were significantly higher in Triumph-treated [isazophos] plots than in untreated control plots." Current and future research on this subject is also presented.
