Abstract/Contents:States that the irrigation need for turfgrass can be derived from the expression (ETâ‚€ x K^D[c)/DU), where ETâ‚€ is the reference evapotranspiration (water use), K^D[c is the crop coefficient, and DU is the irrigation system distribution uniformity. Describes sources and experimental methods to find ETâ‚€. Provides a table of K^D[c values for use in the arid southwest with quarterly, semiannual, and annual irrigation programming. Defines DU, and illustrates its use in a table. Details practical applications of the final irrigation calculation, including the "catch can test" to find DU and the system precipitation rate. Suggests means to optimize irrigation application, including increasing water infiltration, maximizing irrigation system uniformity, and other considerations such as rescheduling of irrigation controllers, differing water requirements for trees and shrubs (hydrozoning), and use of rain switches.
