| Abstract/Contents: | Various herbicides were evaluated for the control of bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) and annual bluegrass ( Poa annua L.) in eight Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) lawn areas. Effectiveness of treatments was based on changes in grass populations and the degree of injury to Kentucky bluegrass. Most treatments reduced the weedy grasses and increased the Kentucky bluegrass. The most promising herbicides for annual bluegrass control were diuron, endothall, linuron and terbacil. The latter three materials along with cyperquat and combinations of endothall plus silvex were effective for bentgrass control. Other herbicides evaluated were DPX-4189, ethofumesate, HOE-22870, MH + CF and silvex. Scalping turf before treatment resulted in decreased bentgrass and increased Kentucky bluegrass, however, injury to Kentucky bluegrass was greater. Watering in spray applications of diuron, linuron, and terbacil resulted in less Kentucky bluegrass discoloration. Thin turf stands and brown discolored lawn areas due to the control of weedy grasses might be avoided by starting treatments before the weedy grasses make up more than 15 to 20 percent of the sward. |
