Abstract/Contents:In pot trials, the competitive interaction between 2 edaphic C. dactylon populations from a highly calcareous soil at Malla (about 25 km from Chandigarh) and non-calcareous soil at Chandigarh in foothills of Punjab in relation to Ca status of soil was investigated. The competitive superiority of the Chandigarh population in a non-calcareous soil and that of the Malla population in a calcareous soil, the susceptibility of the Malla population to inter-ecotype struggle in a non-calcareous soil and intra-ecotypic competition in a calcareous soil and the differential rooting ability of the 2 populations in the 2 soil types and in relation to competition between 2 populations in the 2 soil types, were all related to the adaptive differentiation of the 2 ecotypes in differential habitat situations.
