Abstract/Contents:The high nitrogen rate (6 lb/1000 sq ft) and high mowing practice (2.25 inches) continued for eight years provided substantial control of both crabgrass (76%) and dandelions (73%) as compared to the low nitrogen rate (2 lb/1000 sq ft). Control of crabgrass by siduron and DSMA was in the acceptable range for turf at the highest N rate. At the 2 lb N rate it was not, i.e., crabgrass cover in plots given 2 lb n rate was 24 and 31% for siduron and DSMA, respectively. The 6 lb N rate averaged 6 and 7% cover, respectively. Benefin, DCPA, and bensulide averaged 0, 1, and 3% cover of crabgrass, respectively, across all treated plots. Increasing N rate had no great advantage here because of excellent control in all plots. The interaction of grass herbicide times fertilizer rate was highly significant for the reasons discussed above. When highly effective herbicides were used there was little difference in crabgrass cover related to N rate. Where less effective herbicides or no annual grass herbicides were used there were great changes in crabgrass cover inversely related to nitrogen rate. The crabgrass cover related to the interaction of broadleaf herbicide times N rate was also significant. There were no significant differences in the number of dandelions resulting from the two broadleaf herbicide mixtures. However, higher nitrogen rates reduced the number of dandelions. Siduron and DSMA caused significant reductions in number of dandelion plants. This was a surprising finding to us. It was fairly consistent in the data shown. Higher nitrogen rates provided noticeably denser turf stands of grass and higher appearance scores each year than the lower N rate. Siduron and DSMA reduced turf grass quality. Quality on plots receiving other grass herbicides was better than on control plots.
