Abstract/Contents:"Many golf courses in the United Kingdom possess areas of heathland. This type of habitat is now internationally endangered, as a great deal of it has been lost to farmland or urbanization in the last 150 years. Golf courses have the potential to act as reservoirs of this important habitat. This paper suggests that the ecological theory of metapopulation dynamics needs to be applied to courses in order to understand their conservation value and to enhance it. The theory states that an overall population of a species will persist if there is movement of individuals between fragmented pieces of habitat or patches. With golf courses, there are two aspects of scale to consider, namely the movement of individuals between patches within a course, and the movement between courses. An experimental study is presented that examined invertebrates on one course. It was found that the degree of isolation of patches was much more important in affecting invertebrate diversity than was patch size."
