Abstract/Contents:"Golf is a major outdoor recreational activity that has experienced substantial growth in popularity in the last decade. Through the professional game at major tournaments, golf has attracted a huge global audience. Such a massive activity inevitably has important interactions with the environment. Questions have been raised from many sources - environmental groups, public authorities, academics, the media - concerning land use issues, water consumption and the possible adverse effects from overuse of fertilisers and pesticides. There is, however, another side to golf. It owes its origin to nature. Contact with the natural environment is an essential part of really appreciating the game. This is reflected in both the construction and management of golf courses, where the intensively managed playing surfaces have to be integrated within the natural landscape. The environmental debate is of crucial importance to golf, both internally and in its relations with the wider community. If golf is to continue to develop over the coming years, expanding to new areas and attracting more players, especially juniors, the game's authorities will have to be seen to be addressing environmental issues in a thorough and professional manner. That is the basis behind "Committed to Green." This initiative introduces the concept of Environmental Management Systems to golf. Its purpose is to encourage people to take a more active and constructive role in improving the environmental quality of golf courses. The incentive for individual golf clubs will be official recongnition for implementing a comprehensive Environmental Management Programme, which has been subject to independent verification. This is designed to raise the environmental performance of the golf industry and, as a result, its wider acceptance."
