Abstract/Contents: | Reduced turfgrass growth could conserve energy, labor and resources by lessening mowing needs. Mefluidide and PP333, alone and in combination, were evaluated in 1982 for the suppression of top growth and seedheads in four lawn trials in Norway. The effect of formulation, nitrogen fertilizer and trim mowing was also investigated. Growth response was determined by grass height measurements, seedhead estimates and visual estimates of turf color. Mefluidide and PP333 suppressed the top growth of the grasses with combinations providing greater and longer lasting reductions. All treatments showed the potential for producing objectionable grass discoloration. Seedhead suppression, although variable, was favorable and there was some indication that red fescue seedheads were more difficult to suppress than those of Kentucky bluegrass. The application of nitrogen fertilizer three weeks after growth regulator use improved grass color but increased grass growth. Grass receiving a trim mowing midway during an 8-week growth suppression period showed more growth reduction at 8 weeks, however, total growth was usually greater. Mefluidide was quick acting, but increased growth followed the suppression period. Perennial ryegrass growth was not controlled as well as that of bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass, red fescue and timothy. Timothy was the grass species most susceptible to discoloration. Results from various growth regulator formulations were quite similar. |
